Smishing Scam

Identity thieves are trying to target cell phone users in the Kansas area via text message.  The text message claims to be from a credit union informing the recipients that their accounts have been closed due to suspicious activity on their account and to call a number listed on the message.

As a reminder Credit Union of America will not send text messages to your phone.

Fall 2007 tip

E-mail scams

The FBI has reported an increase of several e-mail scams.  The first type misrepresents the FBI and Director Robert S. Mueller III.  These e-mails are often endorsing a lottery or inheritance notifications for the recipient.  They may also include threat and extortions e-mails, Web monitoring, and malicious computer program attachments (malware).  They usually contain official seals, letterhead, banners and photos, used as a scare tactic.

The second type of e-mail is spam involving the U.S. military.  These are sent from "U.S. military officials" on behalf of an overseas solider.  They usually request sensitive personal information and/or financial support.

The third e-mail is a greeting card scam.  These appear to be from a friend or family member.  There is an embedded link in the e-mail that takes you to your e-card.  The link takes you to a fraudulent, malicious Web site.

As a reminder, beware of unsolicited e-mails.  It's recommended you don't open e-mails from unknown recipients, as they may contain viruses or malware.
