Youth are important at CUA. We offer a variety of services for the youth of our community. Whether you need a savings account or money management features, CUA is the right place to start for training youth in the skills needed to become a responsible adult.
Savings Accounts
A great place to start saving for that special toy, for camp, for that special vacation or even the first car. Our youth accounts are interest bearing on balances of $25.00 or more, and may be opened with as little as $5.00. The youth accounts have no monthly service fees and are NCUA insured. We offer two great accounts for youth that are targeted to specific age ranges:
- Stars of America – for youth 12 and under
- Boom! - for youth 13-17
The Boom! Account even provides a quarterly newsletter geared to this age group with tips and financial facts.
Checking Accounts
Youth members who are at least 16 are eligible to apply for a CUA checking account. The youth checking requires a parent/guardian as a joint co-owner on the account until the youth reaches age 18. The minimum opening deposit is $100.00. Depending on the account type and/or balance, dividends may be earned, and there are no per check fees. Our check provider offers several youth oriented check designs to make managing your money fun! See a Personal Service Representative at any branch to open your new checking.
ATM/Debit Cards
If you are at least 16 years old, you can request an ATM card be set up with your savings account. If you have a checking account, you may be eligible for a Visa Debit Card. Both cards allow you access to your money at any CUA or CO-OP Network ATM surcharge free. With the Visa Debit Card, you can shop at merchants and pay for your purchase by simply signing your name or by entering your PIN. Your parent/guardian must sign to approve issuance of any card product on your account. See the current fee schedule for other fees that may apply to the use of these cards.
Loans
Loans to youth 16-17 years of age generally require a guarantor/co-signer to sign on the document and assume responsibility for repayment should the youth borrower be unable to pay back the loan. Once you are 18 you may apply individually, however, depending on your credit, some situations may require a guarantor/co-signer even if you are over 18. By keeping payments current and repaying loans, you will be building a good credit rating even at an early age. You can apply at any CUA branch, by phone (316-265-3272 or 800-256-8049) during normal business hours or 24/7 on-line!
Student Visa Card
If you are 18+, enrolled in a two or four year college, a member of CUA in good standing, have no bad credit, and have a current student ID, you can start building good credit with a CUA Visa Card. This same card is also available to those students between the ages of 16-18 with a guarantor/co-signer. Start with a $500.00 credit limit. After a year you can request an account review for a possible increase in your limit. The Student Visa is a great help for emergencies when you are away from home, to pay those hefty bookstore bills each semester, or to purchase items at millions of merchants worldwide. With a lower credit limit, it is a great way to learn how to manage credit card bills without letting them get out of hand. APPLY NOW!
